Dog Park Etiquette
Bringing your dog to a dog park can be a great activity for both you and your pet. Dog parks provide a place for your pet to run freely without a leash and to play with other dogs. Although it can be tempting to just sit back and watch the action, you need to make sure that your dog remains under your watchful eye to prevent problems with other dogs and owners. Observing dog park etiquette is necessary to avoid conflicts, and here are some reminders that you should keep in mind.
If you frequent dog parks, you may want to consider getting pet insurance to cover any potential injuries. But shop carefully and be sure you understand exactly what is and isn’t covered. Also, pets are usually covered under the property liability damage portion of even cheap car insurance. But again, look closely at your policy before you actually need it.
Make Sure Your Dog is Healthy and Immunized
Having your dog immunized is very important for you, your pet and other people’s safety. Spread of diseases in dog parks can be fatal for many dogs. Although there are provisions that regulate the entrance of dogs whose age are below those of common vaccinated ones, you need to be vigilant yourself. This goes the same for dogs that are unhealthy, do not let your pet a running source of diseases and parasites that may infect other dogs in the dog park. This will save you from the guilt and if you are a real dog lover, you will be concerned enough for other pets in the park.
Just Bring a Number of Dogs you Can Handle to Supervise
Many off- leash dog parks prohibit the entry of many dogs brought by a single person. This is a matter of common sense as you would not want to stress yourself out in going after many pets. It may be true that the more, the merrier but when it comes to bringing pets, this may not just be a good idea.
Look After and Look out for Your Dogs
Remember, your dog is your responsibility and as a responsible owner, you need to watch out for your dog’s behavior. It is okay to play with other dogs, but when they start some fights, you better jump in and bring your dog home. For those who have female dogs, female dogs in heat can be troublesome inside the park where male dogs swarm all over the place. Finally, clean up after your dog. The waste of your dog must be cleaned by you and every hole he digs must be covered up. This is to maintain cleanliness inside the dog park for every dog’s safety.
